Sir Garfield Sobers was truly the gold standard of what a cricketing all-rounder should be. His effortless elegance, boundless enthusiasm, and deep sense of honor represented our beloved country of Barbados, the wider Caribbean, and the sport itself before the entire world with unmatched dignity.
His genius redefined the sport. Whether he was opening the bowling with fearsome pace, returning as a master of both orthodox and wrist spin, or scoring centuries with absolute grace. The ultimate "five-in-one" cricketer treated every pitch as his own personal canvas, giving generations of spectators and every umpire who was fortunate to stand in the middle with him the best seat in the house.
Our beloved National Hero left an indelible mark on the sport of cricket, on fields across the world, on the pages of history, on every cricket fan’s conscious mind and in the hearts of every Barbadian and West Indian.
We’ve lost an icon, a legend and a gentleman.
Rest in peace, Sir Garry. Your legacy will live on forever in our hearts and cricket history.
From,
The President and Membership of the
Barbados Cricket Umpires Association
