Wood works magic as BCUA XI cruised pass BCA Division 2 XI
A brilliant four-wicket spell from Ethan Wood and a composed innings from Dwayne Rudder guided BCUA XI to a comfortable six-wicket victory over the BCA Division 2 XI in the Annual Umpires' Funday T20 encounter at Brereton on Whit Monday.
After winning the toss, BCA Division 2 XI elected to bat first but found scoring difficult on a hard surface under sunny skies. Kyle Best showed some resistance with 34 from 36 balls, while Ky-Mani Inniss (his son) chipped in with 24. However, regular wickets prevented any sustained momentum.
The star of the innings was Ethan Wood, who tore through the middle order with figures of 4 for 21 from his four overs. Wood accounted for Inniss, Glenmar Hinds, Ian Drakes, and Nathan Kirton to leave the batting side struggling. Supported by disciplined spells from Daniel Joseph (1-7) and Orion Seale (1-10), BCUA XI restricted their opponents to 115 for 8 from 20 overs.
Chasing a modest target, BCUA XI suffered an early wobble when Kirsten Odaine and Larando Best were both dismissed with only nine runs on the board. Young Zakai Weekes struck twice in the space of two deliveries to briefly ignite hopes of an upset.
In came Dwayne Rudder. The wicket keeper-batter steadied the innings with a patient yet authoritative 45 from 41 deliveries. Alongside Roland Knight, he stitched together a crucial 59-run partnership that wrestled control back in BCUA XI favor.
When Rudder eventually departed with the score on 68, the result was still not beyond doubt. But Kemar Roach had other ideas. He immediately shifted gears, blasting an unbeaten 28 from just 16 balls, including two fours and two towering sixes. Jared Gilkes provided calm support as the pair guided BCUA XI home with 14 balls to spare.
While Rudder laid the foundation and Roach applied the finishing touches, the day belonged to Ethan Wood. His match-defining spell ensured BCA Division 2 XI never posted a challenging total and earned him the Man of the Match award.
